Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

  • When looking at the CAST UDL Guidelines you are directed to design in three main ways:
    • Design for multiple means of engagement,
    • Design for multiple means of representation, and
    • Design for multiple means of action and expression.
  • Within the “multiple means of representation”, you are guided to design for:
    • Perception,
    • Language and Symbols, and
    • Building Knowledge.
  • From the UDL Guidelines 3 for building knowledge you can see how the (Yan et al., 2024) learning cognitive processes, (e.g., spaced repetition; attention to essential structures and features; and successful, effortful retrieval from long-term memory), align with the following UDL recommendations to design multiple means of representation:
    • 3.1 Connect prior knowledge to new learning
    • 3.2 Highlight and explore patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships
    • 3.3 Cultivate multiple ways of knowing and making meaning
    • 3.4 Maximize transfer and generalization
  • While UDL provides guidance to design for all learners, it does not specifically address the text formatting needed for those who use screen readers and screen magnifiers. The Accessibility… One Step Closer resource provides specific guidance (e.g., using heading styles for navigation; fonts, colours, tables and lists for those using screen magnification; and audio, video and image checks). These guidelines provide benefits to all learners as well.
